Thorn’s last class was study period with Mr. Fetters. The students filing into the room already had the aspect of people who’d finished the school day. Mr. Fetters was sitting on top of his desk with his legs hanging over the edge, facing the classroom.
Of all the classes Thorn had entered that day, Mr. Fetters’s was the most boring-looking. The beige cinderblock walls were completely bare. Thorn didn’t expect that. Somehow, he thought Mr. Fetters would have a stronger sense of style than was indicated by this ultra-minimalist view of him. Thorn thought maybe he’d misread him. He had long hair and he didn’t look like the typical teacher. Now that Thorn thought about it, though, his gray, button-down shirt and basic black pants didn’t scream individuality.
"Where should I go?" Thorn asked him.
"Wherever you want," Mr. Fetters answered. "No assigned seats."
For a moment, Thorn considered moving behind the desk and lowering himself into Mr. Fetters’s leather chair, just to see what would happen.
"If you sit in the soft seat, you gotta teach the class," Mr. Fetters said, his eyes shining.
Thorn knew he hadn’t been obvious. How did the man know what he was thinking? Given his option, he took a chair in the back row. That class, unlike most without assigned seats, filled up from the front.
Thorn leaned his head back, mostly to avoid staring at Mr. Fetters, but he really was tired. Between worrying over the school thing and staying up with his niece, Hannah, after she woke from a nightmare, he hadn’t gotten much sleep the night before. Hannah had crept into his bed to be held, because Austin hated it when she made late-night visits to her parents’ room, and would have yelled and chased her away. He would have yelled at Feather if she’d tried to go with her, and so Hannah had chosen Thorn’s room, and he lifted the covers and let her in. Austin would have been really mad if he knew about that. He didn’t like Thorn touching members of his family. He claimed not to believe the doctors, that HIV couldn’t be transmitted by casual contact, but Thorn was pretty sure he just said that to be an ass. Beyond that, Austin knew the kinds of things Thorn had done with his foster father. He’d seen it on the tapes and pictures that the police gathered and the D.A. used to send Thorn's foster father to jail. Austin labeled Thorn a pervert, a freak and a fag. Hannah didn’t know what those words meant, but she did understand when Austin told her Thorn was ‘full of germs’. She loved Thorn too much to care, so she’d crept out of her room, down the hall, and into his bed, secure in her faith that he would get her safely back to her own bed once she was sleeping, without her father ever knowing. Thorn had done that for her--for both of them--but it had left him little time for sleeping.
Now, at the end of the school day, Thorn was more than tired. The bell rang, signaling the start of class, and he raised his head.
"All right," Mr. Fetters said. "Who’s got issues?"
"Me!" said a huge boy Thorn thought was most likely a senior.
"What’s the problem, Andy?"
"Poetry sucks," Andy answered, holding up a book, and several students laughed in sympathy. "I don’t even understand what this guy’s tryin’ to say. And by tomorrow, I’m supposed to write a response to it."
"In verse?" Mr. Fetters asked.
"In poetry," Andy answered, scowling. "I can’t write no poetry."
Mr. Fetters smiled. "Sure you can."
"I don’t got a feel for it, man," Andy said, shaking his head. "Poetry’s for girls and wimpy guys."
"Guys like me."
"Naw, man, you ain’t no wimp."
"But I like poetry," Mr. Fetters said. "At least some of it."
"Why?"
"It makes me feel things. It helps me think in new ways. And sometimes it makes me laugh." He tilted his head. "Did Mr. Davis say what form your poem needed to be in?"
"He wouldn’t like you ending that sentence with a preposition," teased one of the girls in the front row.
Mr. Fetters laughed. "You’re right," he said. "This is the sort of bloody nonsense up with which he will not put."
"What?" the girl asked, laughing with the class.
"Supposedly, Churchill said something like that after one of his sentences got reworded by an editor, to take the preposition from the end," Mr. Fetters answered. "But other sources say the notion was floating around before Churchill said it. At any rate, I’ve heard smart people end up sounding like idiots when they try too hard to avoid the preposition thing. So it’s always been my philosophy that if I thought a preposition belonged at the end of the sentence, I would put it there." He laughed. "Except in interactions with my English teachers." He fixed his eyes on Andy again. "What form?"
"Just however we wanna write it," Andy answered, shrugging.
"All right," Mr. Fetters said. "We’re gonna get this goin’. Write the poem from the book on that board over there." He pointed.
"It’s long!" Andy protested.
"Well, write the beginning," Mr. Fetters said. "Legibly, please," he added, arching a brow. "When you’re ready, let us know." He returned his attention to the class. "Anybody else got a problem?"
In the minutes that followed, Thorn saw Mr. Fetters help three students with math problems and two with science problems. He drew the class into the discussion, helping them help each other. Thorn thought he was good at explaining things in ways that people could understand. He even helped a student with French verb conjugations. Thorn had no idea what he was saying, but he liked the way he sounded doing it.
Finally, Andy was ready, and Mr. Fetters turned his attention toward the board. His eyes scanned the words. "Lord Byron," he said as a tiny smile played at his lips. "What does this poem say to you, Andy?"
"I don’t know!" Andy returned. "I don’t understand it."
"Why?"
"I’m stupid, all right?"
"No," Mr. Fetters said. "That’s not all right. When you find yourself in a situation like this, in which you don’t understand something, it doesn’t mean you’re not smart. It usually only means you haven’t yet gained the context for absorbing it. So let’s get you some context." He looked around at the class. "What do you guys know about the poet Lord Byron?"
"It tells about him here," Andy said, offering Mr. Fetters the book.
Mr. Fetters scanned it. He shook his head. "I don’t know why they write this stuff to read like a resume." He handed the book back. "Lord Byron was a man who knew how to live," he said. "And he did it on his own terms. Sit down. We’ll take five minutes for Lord Byron."
Thorn thought Mr. Fetters managed to convey an awful lot in those five minutes, covering everything from Byron’s awkward childhood to his death after he traveled to fight in the Greek war for independence. He told of Byron’s triumphs and disappointments. In short, he made him seem like a man instead of merely a name, and Thorn thought Mr. Fetters was a wonderful storyteller.
"All right," Mr. Fetters said, returning his attention to the board. "So your poem is ‘Prometheus’. What does mythology tell us about Prometheus?"
One girl knew Prometheus gave fire to man. "That’s good, Tammy," Mr. Fetters said. He moved his eyes over the class. "What else do we know?" Nobody spoke. He cocked an eyebrow. "Ya’ll don’t know anything else about Prometheus?"
Thorn knew some more, but it wasn’t his nature to talk in class. He was intrigued by the use of ‘ya’ll’. Mr. Fetters didn’t sound like a southerner--but he said that so naturally, so without self-consciousness, that Thorn thought maybe he was one.
"All right," Mr. Fetters said. "We’re gonna do ten minutes on Prometheus. First, he comes from Greek mythology. The name means ‘forethought’. He was a Titan chief. You guys know about the Titans?" They didn’t. He gave them a little background there. "Some stories actually claim that Prometheus was the creator of man. Zeus sent Prometheus and his brother, Epimetheus, whose name means ‘hindsight’, to populate Earth. Epimetheus went wild, makin’ all kinds of creatures, and givin’ ‘em the gifts Zeus had selected for the creatures. They got fur and claws and fangs and all kinds of stuff. Meanwhile, Prometheus only made one creature… and that was the human… fashioned after the gods. Well, he took so much time about it that there weren’t any gifts left for the humans. In other stories, Prometheus didn't actually create people, but still ended up at the same place. There were no gifts for the humans. They were cold and hungry. So Prometheus decided to give them what he could. He climbed Mount Olympus--that was the home of the gods--and got fire. He carried it to the people of Earth. Up until that time, fire had only belonged to the gods, and Zeus and the others weren’t happy to see people with it." He told them of the plan to punish Prometheus by sending him Pandora and how, after that failed, Prometheus was chained. Every day, his liver would be eaten out, only to grow back.
Mr. Fetters looked around at them. "Everything we just talked about, you could have found for yourselves, on the internet or at the library." He grinned. "Along with some… uhhh… much more interesting facts about Byron’s life that I won’t go into here." He touched his tongue to his upper lip. Thorn quickly lowered his eyes. "We live in the most amazing time in the history of man. Information is everywhere. All you gotta do is want it enough to get it." He leaned back on his hands. "So now we can ask ourselves… why did the gods really care if people had fire? I want an answer from every one of you." They went around the room offering answers, from the ludicrous to the inspired.
Thorn’s turn came. "Fire represents knowledge," he said without raising his eyes.
"Can you expand on that?" Mr. Fetters asked. He’d asked several people to give more details on their answers, but Thorn had hoped he wouldn’t be one of them.
"It’s… the story’s kind of like… with Adam and Eve, and the fruit," Thorn answered, studying the top of his desk. "What sets people and gods apart, in the beginning, is the divine knowledge. Gods didn’t think people should have it."
"Why?"
"Well… I guess… because then their place, as gods, wouldn’t be as… special," Thorn said, finally raising his eyes. "Plus… some of the knowledge was of the type to bring pain, and… maybe some kinds of pain are more easily borne by gods than by mortals. That would be why people are sometimes so… tortured by their existences, and so cruel in interactions with others… in a way that animals don’t seem to be. People have knowledge the animals don’t."
"Thank you, Thorn," Mr. Fetters said. He smiled for a moment and turned his attention to the next student.
The last student answered the question and Mr. Fetters turned his attention to Andy. "All right," he said. "You’ve got all kinds of reasons for why… maybe… at least in the eyes of the gods, Prometheus deserved what he got. That should give you something to think about, when you’re working on your response." He smiled. "Read the poem again. Mark the parts you don’t understand." There were only a few lines Andy didn’t understand, and the class talked about them.
"I got it," Andy finally said, grinning.
"See?" Mr. Fetters said. "Knowledge is power. You have now been empowered to do your homework for tomorrow. You can thank Prometheus and the gift of fire."
Andy laughed. "Is it true, then, what Thorn said about fire being knowledge?"
"In the interpretation of many, yes," Mr. Fetters answered.
"So… that says… knowledge can be a bad thing, too," Andy said. "Not just power, but… maybe weakness. Right?"
Mr. Fetters turned to Thorn. "You wanna take that one?"
Thorn shook his head. He’d already said more than he wanted to that day.
Mr. Fetters returned his attention to Andy. "Well, think about it this way. In life, it’s not so much the reality, as our knowledge or perception of it, that stands to break us. It’s sort of like that whole… if a tree falls in the forest thing. Take ugly dogs. They don’t know they’re ugly. They think they’re just as cute as the next dog in the litter. We know they’re ugly, but they don’t. They’re not gonna agonize over it. But a person who feels ugly… or stupid… or defective… is at risk of letting that perception color every experience he or she ever has. Some people will overcome what they can, to create a new knowledge for themselves. Others will succumb. Knowledge can be a person’s greatest strength or greatest weakness. Fire is warmth. But it also burns." He looked into Andy’s eyes. "I don’t want you to answer out loud. But maybe think of a situation in your own life in which you gained some bit of knowledge that you wish, even now, you didn’t have."
Andy nodded.
"Can you read us that poem, Andy?" Mr. Fetters asked.
Andy wrinkled his nose. He blushed. "Will you?"
"Anybody else willing to read it?" None of them were. Mr. Fetters grinned. "You guys kill me," he said as he swung down from the desk. "So afraid of putting yourselves on the line." He snickered. "Some of the best times of my life have come at the times I looked the most ridiculous." He looked around at them. "All right. I’ll start."
He recited the first few lines of the poem. He didn’t read it from the board. Evidently, Thorn thought, he already knew it. His passion for the words was infectious. When he pointed at the first girl in the first row, she spoke her lines with much enthusiasm. He pointed to the next person, with the same result. He moved among the rows, studying each speaker’s face as the lines were recited. When they reached the end of the lines Andy had put on the board, they passed the textbook. It wasn’t long before Thorn’s turn came; he felt the full power of Mr. Fetters’s gaze as he read his lines. Only a few students gave toneless readings, and Mr. Fetters made them do their lines again. He stood in front of them, grinning and gesturing like an orchestra conductor until they pleased him. Soon the poem was done.
"You guys rock," Mr. Fetters said as he settled himself on his desk again. "I expect you all to show up at the drama auditions this afternoon." He looked at Andy. "Okay," he said. "You understand the poem?"
Andy nodded.
"And you feel the poem?"
"Sort of," Andy answered.
"So you should be in good shape, now, to write a response, right?"
"I get it now," Andy said. He grinned. "But I still can’t write poetry."
Mr. Fetters laughed. "What’s your favorite song, Andy?"
"‘Bitter Torrent’."
"Good song," Mr. Fetters said. "Now speak the words."
Andy said a few lines from the song.
"Once more, with feeling," Mr. Fetters said through his smile.
Andy tried again.
"Very good, Andy," Mr. Fetters said. "Now, a lot of poetry is set to rhythm. Take it further and add music, and you’ve got a song. Since this is your first poem ever and you don’t intend to make money off it, you can be forgiven a little for building on work others have done. If you feel the rhythm for ‘Bitter Torrent’, then maybe as a first step you could offer up your response in that rhythm. You can talk to Byron or Prometheus or… whomever you want. Just read that poem again… think about what you want to say, and say it."
"It won’t rhyme."
"Some poems don’t rhyme," Mr. Fetters said. "And you can get away with that, if what you say and the way you say it is strong enough. But… yeah, rhymes are good. A lot of people can write rhyme right out of their heads. Since this is new for you, then maybe think about what you want to say, first. Get a feel for that and then worry about the rhymes." He smiled. He started tapping his hands on the top of the desk. He was marking the rhythm for the first line of "Bitter Torrent". It wasn’t the kind of music Thorn had ever thought teachers would listen to, but Mr. Fetters obviously knew it well. Some of the students joined in.
Andy’s leg moved in time with the beat. Finally he spoke, timing his words to the rhythm. "What would be the state of man, without that gift of fire?" He went silent.
"That’s good," Mr. Fetters said. He fixed his eyes on a girl who wasn’t beating out the rhythm. She seemed the studious type, to Thorn. "Patricia, will you write it down for him?"
She nodded, opened her tablet, and picked up her pen to write.
Andy started again. "What would be the state of man, without that gift of fire? Would I even know my name? Or Triple-X desire?"
Mr. Fetters laughed. "He’s a natural," he assured the class as he changed the rhythm for the next line.
Andy’s composition went on awhile. Some of it rhymed and some of it didn’t, but he made a good start on his poem.
"Let’s sing it," Mr. Fetters said.
He started, but the others quickly joined in. Mr. Fetters’s singing voice was as beautiful to Thorn as his speaking voice.
Andy was still working on his poem when the bell rang, signaling the end of the day. None of them seemed eager to leave.
"Mandy, can you give me a ride home if I stay?" one girl called to another.
Others grumbled about bus schedules as they got up and made their way toward the door.
"That’s all right," Mr. Fetters said. "We need to wrap it up, anyway."
"I don’t want to finish by myself!" Andy said. He fixed his eyes on Mr. Fetters. "Can we do a study group tonight?" Several other students chimed in to request the same. They wanted help with their own poems.
"All right," Mr. Fetters said. "See you guys at seven-thirty. Auditorium. Call me if you need a ride or can give one."
Thorn was on his way to the door when Mr. Fetters's voice stopped him.
"Thorn, got a second?"
He turned toward the desk and took several steps, then stopped. Though Mr. Fetters was still several feet away, Thorn could could feel him. It was a great deal more unsettling, inside the building, than it had been outside.
Shane sensed a change in Thorn. He'd seemed fine in his company outside but he didn't now. Though there was nothing outwardly cautious in Thorn’s manner, his vibe was… uncomfortable-seeming. With the last of the other students leaving, Thorn’s aura was what Shane could only interpret as an energy barrier, an essence that practically screamed, "Stay away from me."
Maybe it was just the being-called-to-the-teacher’s-desk thing. He wondered whether Thorn would have been that uncomfortable with any teacher or if it was something about him that caused it.
Mr. Fetters took a couple steps closer, reaching to hand Thorn a piece of paper on top of the geometry book. "I marked the things you’d most want to concentrate on, to be able to catch up for the math," he said. "We can fill in the other things later. My phone numbers are on the top. Call if you get stuck."
"Thank you," Thorn said.
"And if you’re interested in coming by tonight, let me know," he said. "It’ll give you a chance to get to know some of the students."
Thorn nodded and left, eager to put some distance between himself and Mr. Fetters. Still, he missed him the minute he was out of his presence.
