Chapter 5

Thorn raised his eyes from the book and saw Mr. Fetters and Mrs. Jenkins crossing the school grounds with a tall, dark-haired woman. He couldn’t make out her features across the distance but she had a hell of a body. They got into a car in the parking lot and drove away, then returned a few minutes later.

Thorn couldn’t be sure, but he thought that outing had the look of a teachers’ lunchtime cigarette break. That was confirmed a few minutes later as Mr. Fetters approached the place where Thorn sat. The two women had gone a different way. Thorn could smell the smoke still clinging to Mr. Fetters’s clothes. He wanted a cigarette something fierce.

"You’re a swimmer?" Mr. Fetters asked.

Thorn nodded, looking up at him. "I dive."

"We meet at ten on Saturdays, here at the school, and head down to the pool. If you’re here, you’ll have a ride."

"Thank you," Thorn said.

Mr. Fetters nodded. "You can sign up on the web page for the county. Or I can get you the forms."

"Web page works," Thorn said. "How much?"

"Fifty," Mr. Fetters said. "If that’s a problem, let me know. We’ll work something out."

"I can do it," Thorn said. He’d once stashed away quite a sum, courtesy of the foster father with whom he'd stayed before he went to live with Austin and his wife, Feather, and it was money Austin had no clue existed. It came in really handy sometimes. Most of it was gone now, paid to Thorn’s former gymnastics coach or given to Feather for things she or her daughter, Hannah, really needed. Still, he had a few thousand dollars left.

"I’m Shane Fetters, by the way."

Thorn thought he looked like a Shane. That had always been one of Thorn’s favorite names, especially after he read the book by that name. Sometimes he wished his mother had given him a normal name like Shane, instead of such a strange one.

"Thorn MacDonnell." Of course, Mr. Fetters already knew that, but it seemed the right thing to say. He smiled. "You don’t look much like a teacher."

"So they tell me."

"I thought you were a kid," Thorn said. "I figured you were in the principal’s office, getting in trouble for something."

Mr. Fetters snickered. "I was."

Thorn laughed, very much liking that evil snicker and the mischievous lights dancing in Mr. Fetters’s eyes. He liked them too much, he thought. He'd spent a good part of his lunchtime telling himself he'd been mistaken in thinking Mr. Fetters was attractive but, now that he saw him again, he looked even better than Thorn remembered.

Thorn desperately wanted a smoke. His nerves were on edge. He hated starting at new schools. "You wouldn’t by any chance be willing to give me a cigarette, would you?"

Mr. Fetters laughed. "Stay away from that stuff," he said. "It’ll stunt your growth." He moved his hands, indicating his own diminutive body. "See?"

Thorn laughed. He thought maybe he liked Mr. Fetters’s personality even more than his looks. "I’ll keep that in mind."

"I can’t give you a cigarette," Mr. Fetters said. "I’m treading on thin ice around here already." He smiled. "But if you’re in the mood to be sociable, I’ll introduce you to one of the guys on the swim team."

Thorn wasn’t in the mood to meet anybody but he didn’t want to be rude. He gathered his things. It took him only a moment to realize that Mr. Fetters was leading him toward the close group of smoking students.

"Fetters!" voices called as they approached.

"Everybody," Mr. Fetters said. "This is Thorn."

The expected greetings followed. Thorn felt awkward in the midst of the strangers. He always hated meeting new people. It was especially hard now because he felt so ugly. The relapse earlier that year had wiped him out. He’d just been getting back to a semblance of his normal self when the pneumonia hit. Even if he’d felt like himself now--which he didn’t--every mirror he encountered reminded him that he was a sick person. He hoped they couldn’t tell. He instinctively moved a little closer to Mr. Fetters.

"You look shy," said a tall girl with red hair. "Are you shy?"

Thorn felt himself blushing. He hated when that happened. "Now and then." He wished he could have the same confidence with girls that he did with women. Somehow, they were just a different kind of creature.

"You have the sweetest accent!" another girl exclaimed. "Say something else."

"Back off, Dana," Mr. Fetters said with a quiet laugh. "You’re taken."

"Hell, yeah," her boyfriend said, looping his arm around her waist and pulling her closer to him.

"But I’m not," said another girl.

Several of the girls were making eyes at Thorn. "You’ll have to excuse them," Mr. Fetters said to Thorn. "It’s just that the only people they’ve had to talk to were these ugly guys here, and--"
He got playful shoves from several directions, as well as a "Fuck you, man!" He laughed.

Mr. Fetters remained a few minutes more, exchanging banter with the students, and Thorn slowly relaxed a little. Mr. Fetters looked up at a tall boy with blond hair. "Looks like Thorn might be swimming with us, Jeff."

Jeff fixed his eyes on Thorn. "You any good?"

"I’m all right, I guess," Thorn answered, shrugging. He and Jeff talked for a few minutes.

Thorn fought back his laughter when, during one of Jeff’s gestures, Mr. Fetters snatched Jeff’s cigarette and put it to his own mouth. Apparently it wasn’t the first time such a thing had happened because several students moved, blocking any view of Mr. Fetters that might have been had from the direction of the school. A few teasingly said they were going to tell on him. Thorn thought maybe he hadn’t been exaggerating about treading on thin ice, if that was the kind of thing he got up to. Mr. Fetters took an impossibly long draw before he grinned, gave back what little was left, and headed toward the building.

"Damn, I love his ass," one of the girls muttered, her eyes on his backside, and her friends snickered.

"I love the whole package," said another girl.

Thorn couldn’t help but empathize. During the course of his life, he’d felt twinges of desire for girls, and even more for women. But those had been nothing compared to what he felt when it came to Shane Fetters. He knew the smart thing would be to spend as little time around the man as he could--but he didn’t want to do that.

Thorn didn’t know what the hell was wrong with him. He’d read that heterosexual adolescents could sometimes develop same-sex crushes. It had never occurred to him that he would ever find himself the victim of one, especially not as old as he was now. He would have to do some more reading to see what he could find out about getting rid of it. He fervently hoped it wasn't something else. What if the sex things he’d done with his foster father had… warped him or something?

Another girl laughed. "The first thing I’m gonna do when I graduate is steal Fetters from that bitch wife of his."

Finally Thorn asked Jeff for a cigarette. When he drew the smoke in, his lungs objected. His eyes immediately watered as he fought not to cough.

"You sure you’re a smoker?" Jeff asked quietly.

"I’m outta’ practice," Thorn answered. "I quit last month."

Jeff rolled his eyes. "Give me that thing!" he said, reaching for the cigarette.

"Hell, no," Thorn said through choked laughter as he took a step back.

"Fine," Jeff said. "Just don’t go suing me, when you get cancer."

Thorn worked to keep the smile on his face.

"I know what it’s like, man," Jeff said in a more serious tone. "I’ve quit twice."

Thorn pushed thoughts of cancer from his mind. The ones that replaced them were almost more unsettling. They were full of Shane Fetters.
