Chapter 2

"I received a call from a parent this morning," George Hallock told Shane. "Is it true that the homework for your Algebra I class is all multiplication and division?"

"No, Sir, not all of it." Shane wondered whose parent had called--and whether the issue really had anything to do with math. Given the timing, he was pretty sure it was Ritchie Chalvers’s mother.

"Explain."

"I tailor the work to the kids’ needs. Multiplication… division… critical thinking… because some of them are not ready for Algebra."

"Clearly their previous teachers and their guidance counselors believe they are. Or they wouldn’t be there."

Shane sighed. "Their previous teachers and counselors who put them in my class are not Algebra teachers. I’m pretty sure I’m qualified to make this assessment." He was only a few weeks into his second year of teaching at Hilldale High School. He’d hoped things would be a little easier in the second year but it wasn’t turning out that way. Already he’d been called to Hallock's office five times. "The lesson plans the Math Department submitted included review. You approved the plans."

"Review, yes," the principal said. "But not three weeks' worth." He paced. "I told you last year that if students are in the Algebra class, they need to be doing Algebra work."

"And I told you that there’s no point in giving them Algebra work when they have no basis for knowing how to do it."

"And yet you taught them Algebra last year and their end-of-year standardized test scores were among the highest in the state."

"And I’m doing things this year just like I did last year."

Principal Hallock crossed his arms over his chest. "Are you telling me that you kept giving them non-Algebra homework last year, even after we discussed it?"

"Yes."

"Knowing I didn’t approve."

"Yes."

The principal picked up his stress ball, working it in his hand while he paced. "So then, this is yet another of those things that we discussed at length. And you listened politely and, I believed, professionally… and then went back and did things your way."

"I would say so, Sir."

"God damn it, Fetters!" Hallock said, throwing the stress ball at his filing cabinet. "You are the head of the Math Department! You are supposed to be setting an example for the others!"

Getting away with things wasn’t as easy as it had been in the beginning. At first, Hallock had given him mandates and sent him away sure that they would be followed. Later, Hallock caught on and began insisting on commitments from Shane to do things his way. That was when the arguments started.

Hallock paced for long minutes, his voice rising and falling as he went over Shane's past transgressions.

The closed door failed to keep the principal’s voice from reaching the main office. Now and then a word came to Thorn, but it was mostly just sounds--intense, maybe even angry, ones. He didn’t hear Mr. Fetters. He thought maybe he was talking in the brief moments when the principal wasn’t.

Austin complained intermittently while they waited for the guidance counselor, making Thorn wish he could be just about anywhere else. "God damn it," Austin said, looking at his watch for what had to be the tenth time. "I don’t know why they couldn’t have called the woman in here while we were doin’ the shit with the forms."

Though Thorn thought things in the office could have been handled a little more efficiently, only someone like Austin would refuse to shut up about it, after the fact. Still, he did feel a certain measure of guilt for keeping Austin from what he’d rather be doing. He turned to him to apologize, for whatever good it might do.

Austin fixed Thorn with his disgusted gaze. In a voice too low for anyone else to hear, he demanded, "What the fuck are you lookin’ at?"

Thorn returned his eyes to his perusal of his sneakers.

"I swear, it is always something with you." Austin shook his head. "Nothing but trouble." Moments later, Austin spoke again. "There is no telling what I’m gonna have to deal with when I get to work."

"I’m sorry, Austin," Thorn said, and he was. He’d done all he could to make this as little trouble to Austin as possible.

Austin snorted. "I oughtta just walk out and leave you here. Let you be somebody else’s fuckin’ problem again."

As much as Thorn hated being Austin’s problem, he didn’t want to be anybody else’s. There were worse things than living with Austin. He’d learned that in his last foster home.

Thorn slumped in the seat, much as Mr. Fetters had done, while Austin’s complaints droned on.

Hallock loomed over Shane. "I want you to teach those kids Algebra."

"When they are ready, I will."

The principal pointed at the phone. "I cannot have parents calling here, worried that their children are not getting the foundation they need to go to university."

"What situation would you rather have, George?" Shane said. "Dealing with a concerned parent now and then? Or graduating kids who have not been given the foundation they need to succeed at university?"

"There are standards for the curriculum," the principal said. "You are not abiding by those."

"Well, maybe I could, except that those who taught these students before I got them cared too much about the letter of the standards and not enough about the spirit. Algebra is a difficult math and requires a higher degree of cognitive processing than the earlier math. In order to do well, the kids have to be beyond a place where they’re struggling with the basics. Because it’s very difficult for them to work out a complex equation when they need paper, three full minutes, and a look at someone else’s answer to divide ninety-six by eight."

"So… you’re saying you’re not willing to abide by the standards."

"No," Shane said. "I'm saying I'm not ready to do it yet. But I have every intention of teaching them Algebra when they're ready and they will kick ass at the state level. In the meantime, if the phone calls really bother you that much, then I’ll be happy to remind the kids that they’re supposed to take their Algebra books home now and then and dabble in them, for the sake of appearances. Just like last year."

"Not acceptable," the principal said. "You have just outright refused to abide by the terms of the job you were hired to do. I think I need to report that."

"Okay," Shane said. "Are we done?"

The principal studied him for a long moment. "Are there no bounds to your arrogance?"

"Theoretically there are," Shane said. "I haven’t hit ‘em yet, though. So are we done?"

The principal waved a hand toward the door. "Go."

Shane moved to the door.

"Shane."

He stopped and turned, leaned his back on the door, and waited.

The office's main door opened and Mrs. Rush entered, wearing a dark purple suit. That shut Austin up. He ran his eyes up and down her body while Thorn got to his feet. The man had no class, Thorn thought, but he did have taste. Mrs. Rush was a beautiful woman, with dark hair, eyes and skin. Thorn thought there was something like a Spanish influence to her looks. She appeared to be in her early thirties.

She gave Austin a perfunctory, all-business smile. "Hello, Mr. MacDonnell," she said. "I’m so sorry for the wait. It’s nice to see you again."

"Pleasure’s all mine," Austin said.

Thorn thought it probably was. Austin had much to say about Mrs. Rush’s attributes after the first time they’d met her--and he said it all right in front of his wife, Feather.

Mrs. Rush cleared her throat, regarding Austin with a look of strained patience, then turned to Thorn. "Welcome to Hilldale, Thorn," she said, smiling. "I’ve been looking forward to your arrival. Let’s go to my office and we’ll get you set up with your schedule." Her eyes swept to encompass Austin in the invitation.

The principal sighed. "Make sure Ritchie Chalvers takes his Algebra book home because I don't want his mother calling me anymore. I'm not sure that woman's quite right in the head."

Shane nodded. He wondered if Mrs. Chalvers had told Hallock what she wasn’t wearing when she called.

Austin watched Mrs. Rush’s backside as they followed her down the wide, beige corridor. Still, she’d made it clear that she didn’t return his interest and continued to do so in her office as she focused on Thorn, outlining the approach she’d taken in deciding what classes to give him.

Mrs. Rush smiled. "I had a chance for a consultation with Mr. Gelfert. Based on his report and your records, I decided to go ahead with the plan to give you the normal ninth-grade course load, and put you into the Advanced Placement courses. How does that sound?"

"That sounds fine," Thorn answered.

Austin finally realized he wasn’t going to get anywhere with Mrs. Rush. "Look," he said, getting to his feet. "I got things to do." He turned to open the door.

"Mr. MacDonnell," Mrs. Rush said, "I’ll need your signature for Thorn’s class assignments. The forms I sent to your address weren’t returned."

Thorn had never seen those forms. They must have come while he was in the hospital. It didn’t surprise him that they hadn’t come back. Feather had probably left them for Austin to sign.

"Whatever you think he should take, make him take it. Where do I sign?"

Mrs. Rush tried to change his mind, but gave up. "Sign here, Mr. MacDonnell."

Austin signed, then turned his attention to Thorn. "Go straight home after school." Then he was gone and Thorn was alone with Mrs. Rush.

She studied the closed door for a moment before she turned her attention to Thorn. "I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you I’m a little concerned about what just happened."

"He’s not usually like that," Thorn said, meeting her eyes. Sometimes he was a lot worse. "He just gets a little stressed when he’s late for work."

"All right, then," she said with a tiny smile. "But if there are things that you’d like to discuss, my door’s always open to you."

"Thank you, Mrs. Rush."

Thorn liked her. She seemed to like her job. He noticed the nameplate on her desk said her first name was ‘Faith’. It suited her. He probably would have flirted with her, just for the hell of it, if there’d been other people there to make it safe. He’d resisted the urge the first time they met; somehow it hadn’t seemed like the thing to do, to flirt with the guidance counselor in front of the superintendent, principal and school nurse.

"Now," she said, looking at him with gentle eyes. "As we discussed, I’ve talked to your teachers about the leukemia."

"But not the HIV?"

"No," she said, shaking her head. "I believe their knowing about the leukemia should enable them to provide you the flexibility you may need. If not, come see me. We’re going to keep open the option of an Individual Education Plan for you, so the tutoring can resume if that seems a better fit. Okay?"

Thorn nodded.

"All right, then," she said. "Let’s get down to business, shall we?" She lowered her eyes to a paper in front of her. "First, English. You’ll have Miss Martin." She smiled. "She’s my sister."

Thorn thought it was interesting for two sisters to want to work together. He would never want to work where Austin did. He wished he didn’t have to know Austin at all.

"History will be Mr. Patrick. Physical Education will be Mr. Bates."

Thorn was a little nervous about that. He’d never taken a formal physical education class. Between gymnastics, swimming and karate, he’d gotten his exercise, but he’d never been put into a school P.E. class with other people, where there might be a chance of physical contact. He’d never played any team sports for the same reason. At the meeting that summer, however, it had been decided that he could do the P.E. class.

Mrs. Rush continued, "I’m sure that, with the leukemia and your ongoing treatments, there may be some days when you don’t feel up to participating. I’ve talked to Mr. Bates. Perhaps the best thing, not to draw attention, would be if you came here on those days, rather than remaining with the class and sitting on the sidelines."

"Thank you," Thorn said.

She told him he could get the gym clothes from the P.E. teacher at the first class he attended. The cost would be $20.

Mrs. Rush returned her attention to the paper. "Now," she said, "I imagine that the biology and geometry will be the most difficult courses for you to catch up in, since they will be building on things the other students have been learning. I know Mr. Gelfert worked on those subjects with you, but it’s possible that the teachers here have focused on slightly different things. So for this first marking period, I think we should focus on only the core curriculum and give you an extra study period, in case you require assistance. That will also help keep your school day from being lengthened by the need to do homework once you leave; you can do most of it here. You’ll have one study period with your biology teacher, Mr. Jenkins. And another with your math teacher."

Thorn was about to tell her he didn’t need a study period for math. He’d done a lot of extra work on geometry in the hospital, anticipating it might be hard to catch up.

"That will be Mr. Fetters."

Thorn decided to keep the second study period after all.

Mrs. Rush smiled. "You’ll have time for one elective." She held out a piece of paper and Thorn scanned it. "May I suggest art?" Mrs. Rush said. "It might be difficult to catch up in some of the courses. But I know Mrs. Jenkins is about to begin a whole new module. So you would be right on track with the other students. And you indicated an interest in taking an art class when we met."

"Art’s good," Thorn said, handing the paper back to her. He wondered if Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins were married.

"Well, your schedule’s all done, then," she said, entering that into her computer. She printed out Thorn’s new schedule and handed it to him. She returned her attention to his face. "Looking ahead to college, you’ll of course want some extracurricular activities." She handed him a paper. "Here’s a list of our clubs and teams. The ones with the asterisks require a try-out."

Thorn studied the paper. "Gymnastics?"

"I’m sorry," she said. "The team is only for girls." She tilted her head to the side. "Do you take gymnastics lessons?"

"Used to," Thorn said. "Not since we moved here."

She nodded. "My brother coaches a local team, with boys. He’s very good, from what I understand. Would you like me to talk to him?"

Mrs. Rush had an interesting family, Thorn thought. Three siblings, all working with kids for a living.

"That would be good, thank you," Thorn answered. "But it’ll depend on how much he charges."

"It can’t hurt to ask," she said, smiling. "Some classes are big and some are kept small. He charges more for the smaller classes, so decide how much you want to spend per week. Some of the bigger classes are through the county, so they’re really affordable, but they’re mostly for beginners."

There was no swim team on the list, either. "Is there a swimming team you could recommend?"

"Mr. Fetters coaches one out of Annapolis," she answered. "It’s through the county, so I know the fees are reasonable."

That didn’t surprise Thorn. Mr. Fetters had the surfer/lifeguard look to him. Getting to Annapolis and back wouldn’t be easy. He would have to look into mass transit possibilities. "I could probably do that, if I can figure out the ride thing."

"I’ll talk to Mr. Fetters. I know he’s willing to help work out rides for his team members," Mrs. Rush said. "So does nothing on our list interest you?"

"Drama Club."

She smiled. "You’ll be seeing a lot of Miss Martin in addition to Mr. Fetters," she said. "Miss Martin is our drama director. As a matter of fact, I believe they’re going to have some auditions this week for the holiday performance. I’ll talk to her."

"Thank you, Mrs. Rush." Thorn thought she was the best guidance counselor he’d ever encountered. She seemed to know a lot about a lot of things. And, unlike some others would have done, she didn’t leave it to him to have to approach all those strangers.

"Why don’t we get you to class?" she suggested. "Stop by after school and I’ll let you know what I’ve found out." She pulled out a map of the school and marked the locations of his classes, numbering them. She used red pen for his classes held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and blue pen for his classes held on Tuesday and Thursday. She checked her watch. "Looks like it’s time for biology." She pointed out its location on the map. "Would you like me to walk with you?"

"I’ll be all right," Thorn said as he got up. He appreciated that she’d asked, rather than just going with him. A few minutes alone would be good. "Thanks for all your time."

She smiled and got to her feet. "I do hope you’ll be very happy here, Thorn."

Be happy. It was an alien concept. Of course, he had happy moments in his life, but the only time he’d ever come close to being happy was in the year between when his mother left his father and when his father showed up to kill them. Even then, the happiness was tempered by the knowledge of what his mother was having to do to support them--and by the constant concern that his father might show up. Thorn didn’t think he’d ever be happy.

"Thank you, Mrs. Rush," he said, returning her smile. "I’m sure I will be."
